UMBC Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee Meeting

September 30, 2022, ADMIN 1005A and WebEx (see at bottom)

4:00 - 5:00 p.m.

    I.      Meeting with Dr. Sheares Ashby

a.     Outlined our major issues (benefits, pay equity, year-long contracts. shared governance, etc…)

b.     Invited her to an upcoming meeting and she said she’d be happy to do that (will follow-up)

c.    Overall showed interest and attention to the issues

    II.      Thoughts on Spring 2023 Conference

a.     Need to develop a theme

b.     Think about keynote speakers

c.     Programming

d.     Usually ask previous grant recipients to show off their talents

e.     Query fellow adjuncts on their needs.

   III.      The Listening Tour (left on agenda since I didn’t get time to create the lists)

a.     Will map out departments and where possible, identify at least one adjunct to contact

b.   Would like each committee member to work from that list on contacting adjuncts in their particular college for a face-to-face discussion about concerns and needs (can be virtual)

c.    Create a report of findings for committee review.

d.   Use those findings to continue to push policy, better treatment of adjuncts, and build community

  IV.      Elections subcommittee updates

a.     Just formed: Bonnie, Maggie, and Mary

b.     Clarifying our election process/rules now that we don’t have Roland assisting

c.     Other issues that they decide to address in regard to the election process

   V.      Shared Governance

a.     Letter to USC written, draft sent to all committee members for feedback

b.     Seeking a seat, through shared governance structure/argument, on University Steering Committee

c.     Have strong support of Provost and will bring this up in first meeting with President Sheares Ashby
