Below is information about a funding opportunity for MA and PhD
students interested in premodern Japan.
We are currently inviting applications for one fully funded opportunity to
pursue an MA or PhD degree at the International Master’s Program /
Doctorate in Japanese Humanities, Kyushu University from October, 2018.
Funding includes one return flight from the applicant’s country of
residence, the enrollment and tuition fees for a two-year MA degree or
three-year PhD degree, and a monthly stipend of ca. 140,000 yen. For an MA
candidate: Upon successful completion of the MA degree, funding may be
extended to complete the PhD degree.
Applicants should be foreign nationals born after April 1982.
Interested students should send a curriculum vitae, a research proposal
(for details see p. 11, “academic essay,” of the attached program
brochure), and copies of recent academic transcripts to
kokusai@lit.kyushu-u.ac.jp by November 15, 2017. Additional documents such as letters of recommendation may be requested from short-listed applicants.
The new brochure will be available in December (http://www2.lit.kyushu-u.ac.
jp/en/impjh/). Program details for the 2018–19 academic year will not
change drastically other than the addition of three new colleagues and
courses in their respective fields:
Ashton Lazarus (from September 2017), medieval literature
Anton Schweizer (from February 2018), art and architectural history
Caleb Carter (from March 2018), religious studies
They join current faculty members Ellen Van Goethem, history (on leave
April 2018–March 2019), and Cynthea J. Bogel, art history.
