The recent discovery and characterization of the ability to optically reflect and waveguide sound in air by the Cullum Laboratory has been announced winner of the 2017 FACSS Innovation Award (selected from over 130 papers submitted to the annual SciX conference (formerly FACSS) on analytical chemistry and spectroscopy). Following an oral presentation of this work by second year graduate student Mr. Daniel Kazal at the special awards session of the annual FACSS meeting (Thursday Oct. 12th), final selection of the 2017 award winner was made. This work is a recent and ongoing collaboration between UMBC and the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, based on Dr. Cullum’s preliminary results, that Mr. Kazal has been furthering over the past year.
