TITLE: Lead Research Assistant
LAB: The Social Determinants of Health Inequities Lab (SoDHI)
DEPARTMENT: University of Maryland, Baltimore County – Psychology Department
LOCATION: University of Maryland, Baltimore County – SOND 513
GENERAL SUMMARY: This position is ideal for any recent B.S./B.A. graduates, current undergraduates, or prospective future graduate students with psychology research experience. The position is only available to those majoring in social sciences (psychology, social work, sociology, etc.). The main responsibilities include working with faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduates, and staff to conduct research (literature-based and with potential future human subjects), maintain the lab, assist undergraduate research assistants, schedule lab meetings and work shifts, and recruit new research assistants as necessary. Can take initiative, autonomous thinker. Must have ability to give exceptional attention to detail, great if familiar with APA style, independent and takes a lead. Available 20 hours weekly.

The SoDHI Lab is directed by Dr. Danielle L. Beatty Moody, PhD., who is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at UMBC. The SoDHI Lab researches projects that are focused on studying how unequal social status and treatment affect one’s health. Specifically, we are researching how social treatment such as discrimination and social status factors such as race, sex, age, and socioeconomic status affects one’s cardiovascular and cerebrovascular health, sleep, and mental health. By working in the lab, you have the opportunity to contribute and help design future research projects.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Oversee research activities and lab activities.
2. Organize lab supplies and order new supplies as needed.
3. Recruit, train, and supervise research assistants, and maintain standards of conduct among lab users.
4. Facilitate communication between lab manager, researchers, research assistants, and staff.
5. Maintain or supervise the maintenance of the SoDHI Lab’s websites.
6. Work on a variety of projects for Dr. Beatty Moody as needed
7. Conduct literature searches and potentially co-lead future studies involving human participants.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Bachelor’s degree in psychology or other social science is preferred.
2. Familiarity with methods of experimentation required.
3. Excellent interpersonal, managerial, and communication skills required.
4. Ability to handle multiple projects, exceptional organizational skills, self-motivation, and attention to detail are required.
5. Previous experience in a psychology or social science based research lab is required.
6. Ability to use software including, but not limited to MS Office, Google Suite, Dropbox, PubMed, Web of Science, and Endnote.
COMPENSATION: Compensation will be commensurate with skills and experience. Hours are 20-24 weekly on campus, with the understanding that there will likely be variability week to week and flexibility within reason is requested on your part.
